The Federal Government’s new National Land Transport Policy is raising hopes that Nigeria can finally address some of the long-standing problems affecting commuters, transport operators and the movement of goods across the country.

For millions of Nigerians, daily transportation remains a major challenge, with high fares, traffic congestion, safety concerns and poorly connected transport systems affecting both household incomes and economic activities.

Nigeria’s Transport Sector Faces Major Challenges

Nigeria’s transport network has traditionally depended heavily on roads for the movement of passengers and goods. The lack of effective coordination between road, rail and other forms of transportation has also contributed to inefficiencies across the sector.

Speaking on the Nigeria Television Authority’s Good Morning Nigeria programme, Professor Umar Adam Katsayal, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Transportation Daura, highlighted some of the structural weaknesses within the country’s transport system.

He noted that fragmentation and the absence of a unified framework have contributed to problems such as unpredictable transport costs, safety concerns and inefficient logistics.

Federal Government Targets Transport Reforms

The National Land Transport Policy is expected to introduce stronger standards and regulatory structures across the sector.

According to Professor Katsayal, the policy represents a move away from short-term interventions towards more coordinated and long-term planning for Nigeria’s transportation needs.

He said the policy would help promote safer, integrated and affordable mobility across the country.

The reforms are expected to affect how commercial transport operators are licensed, supervised and supported, while improved safety standards could become a more prominent requirement for operators.

Another major focus is the integration of different modes of transportation. Better connections between road and rail networks could make it easier for passengers and freight to move between different parts of the country.

Impact on Nigerians and the Economy

A more efficient transport system could have significant benefits for households and businesses.

Reduced travel times and more predictable fares could ease the financial pressure on commuters, while improved freight transportation could help reduce some of the costs associated with moving agricultural produce, manufactured goods and other commodities.

Better mobility could also improve access to schools, hospitals, workplaces, markets and other essential services.

For businesses, efficient logistics can reduce delays and transportation expenses, potentially improving productivity and competitiveness.

Learning From International Examples

Nigeria’s transport transformation could also benefit from international experiences involving organised mass transit systems and technology-driven logistics.

Among the measures that could support the policy are intelligent transport systems, stronger vehicle inspection and maintenance requirements, and better organisation of informal transport operators.

Formalising transport unions and integrating them into more structured operating systems could also help improve accountability and service delivery.

However, the success of the National Land Transport Policy will ultimately depend on effective implementation, funding, enforcement and cooperation among federal, state and local authorities.

Fast Facts

  • Policy focus: Safe, integrated and affordable mobility
  • Major target: Standardisation of commercial transport
  • Key strategy: Greater integration of road and rail transportation
  • Expected benefit: Improved mobility and more efficient movement of goods and people

As implementation progresses, Nigerians will be watching to see whether the policy can translate from a national framework into tangible improvements in their daily journeys.
