The return to educational settings has instilled anxiety among parents and educators, who are concerned that overcrowded classrooms may facilitate the virus’s spread if preventive protocols are not rigorously implemented.
School officials in the impacted areas report that they have enacted additional safety measures to mitigate the risk of transmission.
Gerlance Mahamba Mumbere, a school administrator, indicated that students have been advised to refrain from handshakes and communal eating, and unnecessary movement during recess has been curtailed.
Hand-washing stations have been established in and around classrooms to promote proper hygiene among students and staff.
Parents are also advising their children to exercise caution while at school.
Noëlla Mite Apesilam mentioned that she reminds her children before they depart for school to avoid physical interactions such as handshakes and kisses, while also adhering to hygiene protocols.
These precautions are being implemented as health officials continue to manage what has been characterized as a swiftly escalating Ebola outbreak.
Community leaders in Ituri have voiced concerns regarding the large student populations, pointing out that some schools accommodate hundreds of students in a single facility.
Michel Méta Wani, a civil society representative in Ituri and collaborator with the Ebola response team, emphasized that strict compliance with protective measures is crucial to prevent schools from becoming hotspots for transmission.
He stated that community leaders are ready to support the initiatives being put in place to safeguard children.
UNICEF is also assisting local authorities in efforts to prevent Ebola transmission within schools.
