Monaco have left American striker Folarin Balogun out of their squad for the UEFA Conference League, days after his proposed move to Everton collapsed on the final day of the European summer transfer window.
Balogun, who has returned to group training with the French club, has yet to make an appearance for Monaco this season. He was also excluded from the squad for Friday’s Ligue 1 meeting with Paris Saint-Germain.
The 24-year-old had been expected to join Everton in a deal reportedly worth around $54 million before the transfer fell through at the last minute.
Reports indicate that Balogun became uncomfortable after concerns were raised about his health during the negotiations, leading to the proposed transfer being abandoned.
Monaco Still Looking for a Buyer
The situation leaves Monaco under financial pressure as the club seeks to raise funds through the sale of a major player in order to comply with French league financial regulations.
Despite the collapse of the Everton deal, Monaco have indicated that Balogun could still leave the club if an interested team from a country with an open transfer window comes forward.
Saudi Arabia is among the possible destinations, with its transfer window remaining open until October 12.
However, time is becoming a factor for Monaco, particularly with the Conference League league phase approaching.
The French side is scheduled to begin its European campaign on October 15, but Balogun was not included in the squad list submitted to UEFA and published on Thursday.
Minamino Returns
While Balogun was left out, Monaco included Japan international Takumi Minamino in its European squad.
Minamino is returning after spending around eight months on the sidelines following a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
His injury also ruled him out of the World Cup.
The Japanese attacking midfielder has also been included in Monaco’s squad for the trip to face PSG, meaning Balogun will miss the fixture while his future remains uncertain.
For now, Balogun’s position at Monaco appears unresolved, with the club still potentially open to a transfer before the Saudi Arabian window closes.
