Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was perceived as an “excellent human being” before taking office. However, he suggested that since becoming president, Tinubu’s leadership has not met the expectations held by many Nigerians.
Lawal shared his views during a television interview while evaluating the Tinubu administration’s performance and the country’s political outlook as the 2027 general elections approach. He mentioned having known Tinubu for many years and previously held him in high esteem. Nonetheless, he expressed disappointment with how the administration has managed critical national issues like the economy, insecurity, and the escalating cost of living.
Lawal highlighted that numerous Nigerians are experiencing economic difficulties due to rising inflation, the naira’s depreciation, and increasing food and transportation expenses. He implored the Federal Government to implement policies that would provide immediate assistance to citizens while pursuing sustainable economic reforms.
Further, Lawal called on political leaders to prioritize Nigerians’ welfare over partisan interests, emphasizing that effective governance should be assessed by enhancements in ordinary citizens’ quality of life. Reflecting on the political scene ahead of the 2027 elections, he emphasized that opposition parties and stakeholders must collaborate to offer credible alternatives that strengthen democracy and foster accountability.
