Senator Orji Uzor Kalu from Abia North has urged President Bola Tinubu to offer amnesty to former Nigerian leaders accused of embezzling public funds, allowing them two years to return the stolen money.
Kalu mentioned that the repatriated funds would contribute to enhancing Nigeria’s economy.
Speaking on News Central TV’s program “60 Minutes With Mr. Kay,” the former governor of Abia State suggested that the government should offer an opportunity for individuals accused of embezzling public funds during their tenure to voluntarily return the money without being prosecuted.
Kalu expressed that President Tinubu should consider granting pardons. He mentioned the possibility that if all the houses in Abuja were searched, there could be between 50 and 60 billion just lying around inside them.
Individuals who store money at home are not making the best choice, as it is outside of the banking system. Keeping funds in banks can contribute to economic growth.
I propose that President Tinubu offer a two-year amnesty, allowing anyone who has hidden money since 1960 to return it to Nigeria without facing any consequences. They would receive full pardon for doing so.
“Encourage individuals to bring this money back and utilize it to benefit our economy.”
He claimed that the money supposedly stored by former public officials in their private residences was not benefitting the economy, as it stayed outside of the formal banking system.
