The Rivers State Police Command has terminated the employment of four officers following an inquiry into the death of Anthony Obodo, a recent graduate from the University of Port Harcourt.
Obodo was allegedly shot and killed last Thursday in the Ada George vicinity near Agip Junction, Port Harcourt.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, disclosed the disciplinary measures on Wednesday during a press conference at the command headquarters in Port Harcourt.
The commissioner stated that the investigation into the incident confirmed the officers’ involvement, leading to the initiation of disciplinary actions against them.
Adepoju emphasized that the command would not shield personnel who breach the law, underscoring that accountability, professionalism, and respect for human rights are fundamental to the operations of the police command.
He elaborated that the incident commenced when a patrol team attempted to halt a vehicle purportedly driven by Obodo. The deceased reportedly did not comply, prompting a police chase.
During the pursuit, one of the officers, Corporal Alfred Louis, allegedly discharged his firearm at the vehicle, resulting in Obodo’s death.
The commissioner’s statement arises amidst increasing public apprehension regarding police behavior and the necessity for officers to adhere to legal standards while executing their responsibilities.
In addition, the Rivers State Police Command has reported the apprehension of five suspected members of a one-chance robbery syndicate believed to be operating throughout Port Harcourt and its neighboring areas.
The suspects have been identified as 30-year-old Nelson Idakiniseleg, also referred to as Mandela; 29-year-old Michael Matthew, known as Pilot; 30-year-old Kelly Edison, also called BTC; 18-year-old Daniel Obodo, referred to as Mazi; and 28-year-old Chisom Unegbu, known as Favour.
Adepoju indicated that the suspects were taken into custody during intelligence-led operations executed by the Violent Crime Response Unit, following reports of one-chance robberies within the Port Harcourt area.
Authorities stated that investigations into the robbery incidents are still ongoing.
