Saudi Arabia has shut a major oil pipeline after a drone attack launched from Iraq.

The attack adds to growing tensions across the Middle East. It also raises fresh concerns about global oil supplies.

The affected East-West pipeline is about 1,200 kilometres long. It gives Saudi Arabia an alternative route for transporting crude oil without relying on the Strait of Hormuz.

Saudi officials said the pipeline was closed as a precaution. The attack caused injuries and damage near the facility.

Authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage.

Iraq Removes Military Commander

Iraq has confirmed that the drones were launched from Maysan province.

Maysan is located near Iraq’s border with Iran.

Following the confirmation, Iraq removed its military operations commander in the province from his position.

The Iraqi government has also ordered an investigation into the attack.

Saudi Arabia has decided not to retaliate for now.

The decision followed a call from the Iraqi prime minister. Riyadh also said it would support Iraq’s efforts to prevent attacks from its territory.

However, Saudi Arabia warned that it reserves the right to take action if necessary.

The kingdom said it would protect its sovereignty, oil facilities, citizens and residents.

Attack Raises Oil Supply Concerns

The pipeline is strategically important to the global oil market.

According to Reuters, shipping companies and analysts estimate that the pipeline has carried between 4% and 5% of global oil supplies.

A prolonged shutdown could therefore affect oil markets.

It could also increase concerns about crude oil supplies and prices.

Houthi Advances Add to Regional Tensions

The attack comes as the security situation in Yemen continues to deteriorate.

Iran-backed Houthi forces have reportedly made major gains along parts of Yemen’s coastline.

The group has also claimed control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The waterway is a major shipping route between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It also provides access to the Suez Canal.

The Houthis say maritime traffic remains safe for most companies. However, they have excluded Saudi vessels from that assurance.

Gulf Countries Condemn Attack

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has condemned the drone attack.

GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi described the incident as a dangerous escalation.

He said the attack threatened Saudi Arabia’s security, territorial integrity and vital infrastructure.

The latest developments have increased concerns about the security of major oil and shipping routes.

If disruptions continue, global energy markets could face additional pressure.
