At least 22 individuals have lost their lives and 28 others have been injured following a bus accident in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday, as reported by Egyptian authorities.
The death toll has risen from an earlier count of 16 as emergency response teams continued their efforts at the scene of the accident.
According to Egyptian state media, among those who perished in the crash were 10 Jordanian nationals. The injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals, as stated by the health authorities of the country.
The incident took place on the road linking the Red Sea resorts of Dayan and Nuweiba, a region renowned for its beaches, mountains, and popularity with tourists.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the bus crash. Investigations are anticipated to ascertain whether factors such as the condition of the vehicle, the state of the road, or driver error played a role in the incident.
Road accidents continue to be a significant issue in Egypt, where such incidents are often attributed to reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance, and deficiencies in traffic law enforcement.
In 2025, nearly 6,000 fatalities were reported due to road accidents throughout Egypt, underscoring the persistent challenges related to road safety in the country.
This latest tragedy has reignited concerns regarding road safety, especially on routes that connect tourist hotspots with more isolated regions of the nation.
