Ugandan footballer David Owori has passed away following an attack believed by police to have been a robbery near his home in Kampala. The 27-year-old, who captained SC Villa and played for Uganda’s national team, sustained severe injuries when he reportedly resisted an attempt to steal his phone and other belongings. Despite being taken to the hospital, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police have initiated an investigation and are diligently working to identify those responsible for the attack.
Owori’s death has sparked widespread mourning across Uganda, with teammates, fans, and political figures paying homage to one of the nation’s most esteemed footballers. SC Villa honored him as “a leader, brother, and friend,” while the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) commended his significant impact both on and off the field.
In 2023, Owori returned to SC Villa and contributed to the club’s victory in the Uganda Premier League title in 2024, breaking a 20-year championship drought. His outstanding performances led to a contract extension until 2027.
This tragic incident has reignited concerns about violent crime in Kampala, with numerous Ugandans demanding tougher measures against criminal activities. It follows only weeks after Ugandan rugby international Sydney Gongodyo was killed in a different attack within the city.
