The political contest ahead of the 2027 Rivers State governorship election has attracted fresh attention following a meeting between National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, and former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
The meeting reportedly took place at Jonathan’s residence in Bayelsa State as political activities surrounding the February 2027 governorship election continue to develop.
Although details of their discussion have not been officially disclosed, the engagement has generated interest given Lulu-Briggs’ ambition to become the next governor of Rivers State.
The NDC candidate is expected to face competition from other political parties, including Gabriel Pidomson of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Kingsley Chinda of the All Progressives Congress (APC), according to the reported list of contenders.
The meeting with Jonathan has also attracted attention against the background of recent political comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Wike had reportedly dismissed Lulu-Briggs’ chances in the forthcoming election, arguing that Kingsley Chinda was better positioned to secure victory because of the support of the Rainbow Coalition.
However, Lulu-Briggs’ engagement with the former President has added another dimension to the developing political conversations ahead of the election.
While it remains unclear whether the meeting involved discussions about political endorsements or broader consultations, the encounter highlights the importance of political relationships and stakeholder engagement as candidates prepare for the Rivers governorship contest.
With the 2027 election approaching, attention will remain on the alliances, consultations and campaign strategies of the major contenders.
The Rivers governorship race is expected to attract considerable political attention as the different parties work to build support across the state.
