The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it will not ask FIFA President Gianni Infantino to explain the controversial red card shown to Nigerian defender Leon Balogun during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that disciplinary matters fall exclusively within FIFA’s authority.

The decision comes amid growing debate among football fans, former players, and sports analysts over the sending-off of Balogun in one of the tournament’s most talked-about incidents. Many supporters argued that the referee’s decision was overly harsh and may have significantly influenced the outcome of the match.

Responding to questions on the controversy, IOC officials maintained that while they closely monitor developments in international sport, they do not interfere in the disciplinary processes of independent international federations.

According to the IOC, FIFA has its own established judicial and disciplinary mechanisms to review contentious incidents, referee decisions, and matters relating to the Laws of the Game.

“The IOC respects the autonomy of international sports federations. Matters concerning officiating, disciplinary decisions, and competition management at the FIFA World Cup are the responsibility of FIFA,” an IOC spokesperson said.

The red card issued to Balogun has continued to generate widespread reactions, with many Nigerian football supporters insisting the decision changed the course of the match and unfairly disadvantaged the team. Several football pundits have also called for greater consistency in the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system during major international tournaments.

Despite the criticism, FIFA has yet to indicate whether it will review the incident or release additional comments regarding the referee’s decision. Under FIFA regulations, on-field decisions made by match officials are generally considered final unless there is evidence of mistaken identity or procedural errors.

The controversy has reignited discussions about refereeing standards, the application of VAR technology, and transparency in football officiating at the highest level of the game.

As the debate continues, the IOC has made it clear that it will not intervene, leaving any further review or disciplinary action entirely in the hands of FIFA and its judicial bodies.
