Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed how Charly Boy’s devotion to his parents changed the way he viewed the popular entertainer.
Obasanjo made the disclosure while appearing on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast hosted by comedian and content creator Isbae U.
The former president said he initially had little respect for Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy.
However, his opinion changed after he visited the home of the entertainer’s father, the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.
Charly Boy’s care for his father impressed Obasanjo
Obasanjo said he once visited Justice Oputa without knowing that the home belonged to Charly Boy.
During the visit, he observed how the entertainer personally cared for his father.
According to Obasanjo, what he saw made him reconsider his earlier opinion of Charly Boy.
“When I first came to know Charly Boy, I had no iota of regard or respect for him,” Obasanjo said.
He explained that Charly Boy continued caring for his father until his death.
The former president described the care as exceptional and said it had a major influence on his perception of the entertainer.
He also cared for his mother
Obasanjo said his positive impression of Charly Boy continued when he became familiar with the way he cared for his mother.
He recalled visiting Charly Boy’s mother several times and described her as a woman with a strong sense of humour.
According to the former president, Charly Boy also showed considerable devotion to his mother.
Obasanjo questioned Charly Boy’s public image
Obasanjo said he later asked Charly Boy about his unusual public personality and appearance.
The entertainer reportedly explained that his eccentric style was part of his business strategy.
“Look, Charly Boy, what’s all this?” Obasanjo recalled asking him.
According to Obasanjo, Charly Boy responded that the unconventional behaviour was intended to help him make money.
Former president praises Justice Oputa
Obasanjo also spoke highly of Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, whom he described as one of the Nigerians he respected greatly.
He said he wished Charly Boy had adopted more of his father’s qualities.
Despite his earlier reservations, Obasanjo acknowledged Charly Boy’s intelligence.
He argued that maintaining such a distinctive public identity as a means of earning a living requires a certain level of intelligence.
