Democratic leaders in the United States have vowed to increase congressional oversight of President Donald Trump’s administration after their party won control of both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, who is positioned to become the next Speaker of the House, said the incoming Democratic majority would act to check what he described as an “out-of-control executive branch”.
Jeffries also accused the administration of widespread corruption, referring to it as the “Trump Cartel”, and promised that those responsible for wrongdoing would be held accountable.
“We are going to hold the crooks accountable,” he said.
Democrats Prepare for Congressional Investigations
The Democratic victory gives the party control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, significantly changing the political balance in Washington.
With control of both chambers, Democrats will have greater authority to shape congressional investigations, influence federal spending and scrutinise presidential appointments.
The party has indicated that investigating the Trump administration will be among its priorities when the new Congress takes office in January.
Trump Links Republican Defeat to Iran War
President Trump acknowledged that the ongoing war involving Iran contributed to the Republican Party’s poor performance in the elections.
Asked about the impact of the conflict, Trump reportedly said it was “largely true” that the war played a role in the party’s defeat.
Vice-President JD Vance also acknowledged the political impact of the conflict, saying that “everyone knows” the war was a factor.
The comments have raised questions about the administration’s handling of the conflict and its consequences for American voters.
Oil Prices Fall Following Election Result
Oil prices also reportedly declined to their lowest level in two months following the election outcome, adding another economic dimension to the political developments.
The Democratic victory marks a significant shift in Washington and is expected to intensify political scrutiny of the Trump administration during the remainder of his presidency.
However, President Trump retains the power to veto legislation passed by Congress, meaning Democrats will need political cooperation to overcome major legislative obstacles.
