The political atmosphere ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election has been thrown into fresh controversy following reports that the campaign convoy of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was attacked in Kebbi State.
The incident reportedly happened on Thursday as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential campaign team moved through the state for political engagements.
According to accounts from members of the campaign team, suspected political thugs allegedly blocked the convoy, attacked vehicles with stones and turned their attention towards journalists and members of the media crew covering the campaign activities.
The campaign team claimed that several valuable pieces of broadcasting equipment were destroyed during the incident.
Among the damaged items were cameras, video recording equipment, tripods and other professional tools used by the media personnel to document and transmit campaign activities.
A member of the campaign team alleged that the attackers were not interested in stealing valuables but deliberately targeted equipment used to record the events.
The team further described the incident as an attempt to intimidate supporters and prevent the public from seeing what was happening during the campaign in Kebbi.
The ADC campaign team also alleged that the attackers were sponsored, although no independent evidence establishing who was behind the reported incident has been provided.
The development raises fresh concerns about political tolerance, the safety of journalists and the freedom of political parties to campaign peacefully ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political campaigns are a fundamental part of democracy, and every political group must be allowed to engage voters without intimidation or violence.
Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported incident and ensure that those responsible, if identified, are held accountable.
