Rwanda forward Joy-Lance Mickels has backed Real Madrid and France captain Kylian Mbappé to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
Mickels made his choice while speaking ahead of Rwanda’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Liberia.
The forward, who plays for Sabah FC, believes Mbappé has done enough to be considered for football’s most prestigious individual award.
According to The New Times, Mickels said Mbappé’s performances during the season have been exceptional.
“For me, Kylian Mbappe deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.
“What he has done this season has been exceptional, and I think he has shown why he is one of the best players in the world.”
Mbappé is among the 30 players shortlisted for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. The final winner will be announced at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on October 26, 2026.
The France captain is competing against several high-profile players, including Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and defending winner Ousmane Dembélé.
For Mickels, however, Mbappé’s performances have made him deserving of the individual honour.
Mickels Focused on Rwanda’s AFCON Qualifier
While discussing the Ballon d’Or, Mickels is also preparing for Rwanda’s opening Group K qualifier against Liberia.
The match is scheduled for September 25, with Rwanda hoping to begin its campaign strongly as it seeks qualification for the 2027 AFCON tournament.
