Indian security forces have mounted a major security operation in New Delhi, barricading roads and detaining protesters as the so-called Cockroach Janta Party stages demonstrations over unemployment, electoral reforms and government accountability.

The protest movement says its leader, Abhijeet Dipke, is among hundreds of people reportedly detained since Friday evening. The scale of the detentions has not been independently established in the supplied report.

Thousands of security personnel have reportedly been deployed across the Indian capital, with roads leading to Jantar Mantar, a prominent protest location, heavily barricaded.

Protest movement grows over unemployment

The Cockroach Janta Party movement reportedly began in May, initially as a satirical response to a remark attributed to India’s Chief Justice, Surya Kant, who likened unemployed young people to “cockroaches.”

What began almost as a joke has since attracted attention by tapping into public frustration over unemployment, examination paper leaks and concerns about government accountability.

The latest demonstration is also calling for electoral reforms and the resignation of India’s election chief.

Dipke has reportedly said he is prepared to go to jail over the movement, which has gained momentum amid wider concerns about employment opportunities and the political system.

Economist Jean Drèze reportedly detained

Prominent economist Jean Drèze was also reportedly removed by police after attempting to stage a sit-in near the protest site.

According to an eyewitness account from the scene, Drèze arrived near Jantar Mantar and held up a poster before police personnel approached him.

Around seven or eight officers reportedly carried him away and placed him on a bus. Some female protesters accompanying him were also detained and taken away in the same vehicle.

Heavy security around protest site

Roadblocks and a substantial security presence have restricted access to areas around Jantar Mantar as authorities seek to prevent the demonstration from spreading.

The reported detentions have placed renewed attention on the handling of public protests in India, particularly those focused on employment, electoral accountability and government conduct.

The situation remains fluid, and further confirmation is needed regarding the number of people detained and whether those taken away, including Dipke and Drèze, have been released or formally charged.
