Gianni Infantino continues as the president of FIFA after receiving support from senior executives during a meeting in Morocco, where he apologized for the “errors” he made. His position has been under scrutiny due to the controversial plan to sell stakes in FIFA’s competitions to private investors.
A FIFA statement noted that the FIFA Management Board members present at the meeting reaffirmed their full support for Infantino as President. He is expected to pursue re-election for a fourth term and will require 106 votes from FIFA’s 211 members to secure victory.
Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter was among those who criticized FIFA’s plan. Blatter commented that FIFA is not a private equity fund but rather an association with statutes, regulations, and a fiduciary duty to protect the global game. He expressed concerns that selling football’s prized assets to private investors could compromise the essence of the sport, emphasizing that while money is important, it should not become all-consuming.
Infantino became the president of FIFA in 2016 following Sepp Blatter’s resignation.
