More than 10 youths injured during the reported disruption of Peter Obi’s convoy in Benue State have allegedly been taken to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, for medical treatment.
The incident occurred on Tuesday along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway when suspected thugs reportedly blocked the convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate.
Obi was travelling to Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area to pay a condolence visit to families affected by the June 13, 2025 terrorist attack when his movement was reportedly disrupted.
An official of BSUTH, who spoke anonymously, confirmed that more than 10 injured people were brought to the hospital for urgent medical attention.
However, the official said the hospital could not establish whether the patients were victims of the incident involving Obi’s convoy.
“Over 10 wounded victims were brought in here yesterday for urgent medical attention,” the official said, adding that they were responding to treatment and that no death had been recorded among the patients under their care.
The official reportedly described the patients as accident victims and said the hospital had no information linking them to the political incident.
Efforts to obtain confirmation from the Chief Medical Director of BSUTH, Dr Stephen Hwande, were reportedly unsuccessful as of the time of filing the report.
Meanwhile, the NDC Benue State publicity secretary, Agile-Bem Jabez Ordedoo, made a separate claim that one of the alleged attackers had died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Ordedoo said the deceased was among youths allegedly mobilised to attack the NDC presidential and governorship candidates.
The conflicting accounts have left the circumstances surrounding the reported injuries and death unclear.
Peter Obi had subsequently accused the Special Assistant to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Youths of allegedly masterminding the attack and mobilising youths to block his convoy.
The allegation against the governor’s aide has not been independently established based on the information available.
The incident has generated political reactions, with calls for authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the blockade and the reported injuries.
