In Algeria, a tragic bus crash claimed the lives of at least 27 individuals and injured many others on Friday. The passenger bus veered off the road and fell into a ravine in Boumerdes Province, located east of the capital, Algiers.
The country’s Civil Defence Agency reported that the accident happened near the coastal town of Boumerdes at approximately 9:40 a.m. local time (0840 GMT). Rescue teams promptly arrived at the scene to assist survivors and retrieve victims.
The authorities are still investigating the reasons why the bus went off the road, with the cause of the accident yet to be determined. This incident ranks among Algeria’s most severe road accidents in recent history.
In a previous incident in August 2025, 18 people died when another passenger bus plunged into a ravine near Algiers. Similarly, in December, 14 individuals lost their lives when a bus overturned in Bechar’s southern region.
Road safety officials have consistently pointed out that speeding and other human errors are major contributors to fatal accidents throughout this North African country. Official data from 2025 revealed that 3,838 people were killed, and more than 37,000 were injured in road traffic accidents across Algeria, underscoring ongoing road safety issues.
The authorities have confirmed that investigations into Friday’s crash continue to uncover the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
