The political activities surrounding the Rainbow Coalition led by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike are creating fresh debate within the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to reports, some APC members and former party officials who are dissatisfied with internal party processes have been associating with the coalition.
The development has attracted attention within the ruling party, particularly after the APC Progressive Governors Forum raised concerns about political arrangements that could affect the party and its candidates.
APC Governors Raise Concerns
The Progressive Governors Forum, chaired by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, recently said APC governors would not support any alliance or political arrangement that could undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election or weaken APC candidates.
The governors said their campaign structure would remain focused on APC candidates at all levels.
Their position has brought the coalition into sharper focus as political parties and their members prepare for the 2027 elections.
Wike Explains the Coalition’s Purpose
Wike has rejected the suggestion that the Rainbow Coalition is an APC structure.
The FCT minister said the coalition was created as a platform through which supporters from different political parties could mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election.
He also made it clear that supporting Tinubu at the presidential level does not mean the Peoples Democratic Party will not field candidates for governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections.
Wike said political contests in the various states should be handled separately from the presidential election.
Aggrieved Politicians and the 2027 Elections
The disagreement has also drawn attention to politicians who became dissatisfied with the outcome of party primaries.
An APC source cited in the original report claimed that some aggrieved members had chosen to work with Wike while maintaining support for Tinubu at the presidential level.
The source also suggested that dissatisfaction arising from state-level party primaries could influence political alignments before the elections.
These claims could not independently establish the size of the group or the number of APC figures involved.
Coalition Remains a Point of Debate
The Rainbow Coalition has therefore become part of a wider political debate over whether support for Tinubu’s presidential bid can exist alongside support for candidates from other parties at state and legislative levels.
While Wike says the coalition is separate from the APC, the APC governors have stressed their commitment to the party’s candidates.
The competing positions are expected to remain an important part of political discussions as the 2027 elections approach.
