Igbo traders have raised concerns over the growing involvement of Chinese businesses in Nigeria’s distribution and trading sector, with Market Strategist, Mr. Ade Royal, calling for stronger regulation and greater stakeholder involvement.

Royal said the issue should not be viewed as a Lagos-only development, noting that similar activities are taking place in Abeokuta and other parts of the country.

He said the situation requires a broader national discussion involving traders, importers, exporters, marketers, consumers and relevant government agencies.

Ade Royal Raises Concern Over Chinese Distribution Activities

According to Mr. Ade Royal, foreign businesses could expand into additional areas of the Nigerian market if appropriate rules and monitoring mechanisms are not put in place.

He expressed concern that the growing presence of Chinese businesses as distributors could create additional competitive pressure for Nigerian traders and business owners.

Royal acknowledged that consumers may initially welcome the development because increased competition can result in lower prices.

However, he argued that consumers should also consider the possible long-term consequences of allowing foreign companies to become deeply established across different segments of the Nigerian market.

He said companies that initially offer competitive prices could later adjust their strategies after gaining a stronger understanding of the Nigerian market.

‘We Should Not Allow Nigeria to Become a Dumping Ground’

Royal warned against policies or market conditions that could turn Nigeria into a dumping ground for imported products.

He said the government should carefully monitor foreign business activities while examining their effects on domestic manufacturers, distributors, importers and traders.

“What we are saying is that we need a proper system,” Royal said.

According to him, the government should bring all relevant stakeholders together to examine the situation and develop practical recommendations.

Call for Stakeholder Collaboration

The Market Strategist stressed that the issue should not be tribalised or treated simply as a disagreement between Nigerians and Chinese businesses.

He said the discussion should focus on how Nigeria can create a fair and sustainable market that accommodates legitimate foreign investment while protecting local businesses.

“We don’t need to tribalize this matter. This is a serious issue for marketers, exporters and, especially, importers,” he said.

Royal urged stakeholders to document the challenges they are experiencing and present them collectively to the government.

He said government officials would have a better understanding of the situation if those directly involved in the market provided information about what is happening on the ground.

Foreign Investment Needs Proper Regulation

Royal acknowledged that the Nigerian government wants to attract foreign investment.

He said such investment can create opportunities, but argued that it should operate within a clear regulatory framework.

According to him, Nigeria needs to identify areas where foreign investment can benefit the economy while also determining where it could create challenges for local businesses.

He said Nigerian traders, importers, exporters, marketers and consumers should all have a voice in the development of policies affecting the market.

Consumers May Benefit From Lower Prices

Royal noted that consumers could initially benefit when businesses offer products at cheaper prices.

However, he cautioned that low prices should not be the only factor considered when assessing the long-term effect of foreign businesses on the Nigerian economy.

He argued that once a company becomes firmly established in a market, its commercial strategy can evolve in response to market conditions.

For that reason, he said policymakers should consider both the immediate benefits to consumers and the possible long-term implications for Nigerian-owned businesses.

‘Today, We Are Talking About Chinese Businesses’

Royal said Nigeria should establish a regulatory system that applies to foreign businesses regardless of their country of origin.

“Today, we are talking about Chinese businesses. Tomorrow, it could be Japanese businesses or investors from somewhere else,” he said.

He therefore advocated a system in which every foreign business entering Nigeria understands the applicable rules and operates within the same regulatory framework.

Traders Encouraged to Raise Their Concerns

Royal also encouraged stakeholders to attend meetings at the market headquarters in Lagos, led by Chief Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.

He said meetings are held every Tuesday and provide an opportunity for traders and other stakeholders to discuss challenges affecting their businesses.

According to him, individuals with concerns should bring them forward so that stakeholders can examine the issues collectively.

He said the outcome of such discussions could then be presented to government authorities as practical recommendations.

Building a Sustainable Market

Royal said Nigeria should not respond to foreign investment on a case-by-case basis.

Instead, he advocated a sustainable system that clearly defines how foreign businesses should operate in the country.

“What we need is a running system—one that works regardless of who comes into the Nigerian market,” he said.

He added that such a system should provide clarity for foreign investors while protecting Nigerian businesses and consumers.

Balancing Foreign Investment and Nigerian Interests

Royal stressed that the objective should not be to reject legitimate foreign investment.

Rather, he said Nigeria should create conditions that allow international businesses to invest while ensuring that local enterprises are able to compete within a properly regulated market.

He said bringing government, traders, importers, exporters, marketers and consumers together could help produce practical solutions.

According to him, combining the experience of stakeholders with government policy perspectives could lead to a more effective framework for Nigeria’s trading environment.
