The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has experienced a significant operational setback following the accidental explosion that resulted in the deaths of five suspected members as they were assembling improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Borno State.
This incident took place in Maina Daya Village, situated in the Marte Local Government Area between Sabon Tumbu and Jubilaram, around 29 kilometers east of Monguno.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama reports that those killed included Usman Dan Fulani, identified as an ISWAP medical officer, along with two foreign Arab nationals who served as IED technicians, and two other individuals suspected to be bomb-making specialists.
Preliminary security reports suggest the explosion occurred while preparing these explosive devices for future attacks.
Intelligence sources indicate that these explosives were intended for use along strategic military supply routes within Sector 1 of Operation HADIN KAI, a key military counter-insurgency operation in Nigeria’s North-East.
Security officials believe the loss of the bomb experts could significantly hinder ISWAP’s ability to produce explosive devices, temporarily reducing their capacity to carry out roadside IED attacks, notably along the Marte–Monguno corridor.
In response, military authorities have reportedly ordered intensified security measures throughout Marte, Monguno, and Gamboru Ngala, instructing troops to enhance patrols, conduct cordon-and-search operations, and maintain offensive actions to prevent insurgents from regrouping.
Investigations into the explosion’s circumstances continue as security agencies keep up pressure on terrorist strongholds in the region.
