The United States has implemented a 12.5 percent tariff on most Nigerian exports to the American market as part of a broader trade initiative targeting 60 economies. This action is in response to concerns regarding the enforcement of bans on goods produced with forced labor.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has announced that these measures take immediate effect under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974. According to U.S. officials, the tariffs are directed at countries that have not adopted or effectively enforced prohibitions against the importation of goods manufactured wholly or partially by forced labor.

This policy is aimed at strengthening global labor standards and ensuring fair competition in international trade. Nigeria is among those countries facing the 12.5 percent duty, while a reduced tariff of 10 percent applies to countries that either enforce or have committed to enforcing similar restrictions on forced-labor goods.

These tariffs cover most imports, although several categories—such as certain raw materials, food products, oil and gas, and products already under other U.S. trade measures—are exempt. The decision comes after months of investigations, public consultations, and hearings conducted by the USTR into the trade practices of the affected economies. U.S. representatives argue that inadequate enforcement of forced-labor import bans distorts international trade and globally undermines workers’ rights.

This new tariff is expected to raise the cost of many Nigerian products exported to the United States, which could impact manufacturers, exporters, and businesses dependent on the U.S. market. Trade analysts suggest the policy might affect bilateral trade relations unless further negotiations result in policy adjustments or exemptions.

At the time of this report, the Nigerian Federal Government had not made an official response to the new U.S. trade measure. Industry stakeholders are likely to keep a close watch on how this impacts Nigerian exports and consider possible responses to protect the nation‘s trade interests.
