The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, has said the Igbo people’s path to producing Nigeria’s President must be based on what he described as “dignity.”
Amadi stated this in a post on X while commenting on the prospects of an Igbo presidency in Nigeria.
According to him, achieving the presidency requires more than political ambition.
Amadi Explains His Position
Amadi wrote:
“I have said it before, the only pathway to Igbo presidency in Nigeria is a path called ‘dignity’. Eji ndu eme gini (what is the value of life), talk less of Nigerian presidency, outside dignity.”
His comments come as political discussions intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
South-East Presidency Debate
The question of whether the South-East should produce Nigeria’s President has featured prominently in previous election cycles.
During the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, there were calls in some political circles for the South-East to produce the country’s president.
Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi was the presidential running mate to Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2019.
In 2023, Obi left the PDP and contested the presidency on the platform of the Labour Party.
He finished third in that election, behind Atiku Abubakar and Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who won the election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
Obi Set for Another Presidential Bid
Obi is expected to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), according to the report.
Amadi’s latest comments come amid renewed political discussions about presidential candidates, regional representation and the alliances taking shape ahead of the 2027 election.
